Manus AI vs ChatGPT Agent vs Claude (2026): Agent Test

Manus AI agent vs ChatGPT Agent vs Claude (2026): autonomous tasks, pricing, limits, and which agent fits your workflow. Hands-on test.

AI Tools Radar Editorial 11 min read

Short answer: Manus AI, ChatGPT Agent, and Claude all run multi-step AI work in 2026, but they optimize for different finishes. Manus is for async deliverables (CSV, deployed page, chart pack) with a visible sandbox. ChatGPT Agent is for daily chat users who want agent tools without a second product. Claude is for careful prose, coding, and in-thread research with strong pushback on weak plans. We re-ran our June Manus AI review briefs on all three in June 2026. Pair model backends with the Latest AI Models Compared (2026) hub and June Week 1 radar for weekly agent launches. Verdict: Manus for bounded ops projects with file outputs. ChatGPT for individuals already on Plus. Claude for teams standardized on Anthropic and repos.

How we tested (June 2026)

Brief 1 (research CSV):

Find 35 US journalists covering climate tech for enterprise buyers. CSV columns: name, outlet, beat, profile URL, email only if on author page. Minimum 30 rows with verified outlet.

Brief 2 (vendor matrix):

Compare Asana, Monday, ClickUp for a 12-person marketing agency. Table: entry price (June 2026), AI features, Slack/GA integrations, mobile app rating. Label unknowns TBD.

Protocol

  1. Manus: Agent Mode, Free/Pro mix across two accounts (verify credits live)
  2. ChatGPT: Agent / deep research on Plus account (feature names vary in UI)
  3. Claude: Claude.ai project with web search on; separate Claude Code run for matrix code export
  4. Logged wall time, human fix count, billing units
  5. Compared model backends using latest AI models compared

We did not test Team SSO on all three. We did not paste regulated health data.

Manus AI

What it is: Manus runs goal-driven jobs in cloud sandboxes and returns artifacts. The site now shows Manus is part of Meta on manus.im. See our full Manus AI review for credit tables, Wide Research, and procurement notes (China blocked Meta deal, April 2026).

June results

  • Brief 1: CSV in 52 minutes async; 33 usable rows after we deleted two bad emails. Sandbox log showed which pages failed paywalls.
  • Brief 2: Markdown table in 41 minutes; one price cell wrong (Monday tier). Fix took 6 minutes manual.
  • Credits: Brief 1 consumed roughly 280 credits (between official 200 and 360 examples). Brief 2 about 220 credits.

Pick Manus when: You want a file out and an audit trail, and you can wait async.

Skip Manus when: Legal has not approved vendor ownership uncertainty or you need sub-hour SLA every day.

ChatGPT Agent

What it is: OpenAI bundles agentic browsing, file tools, and multi-step plans into ChatGPT for paying users. Exact feature names shift; treat OpenAI Help as source of truth.

June results

  • Brief 1: 38 minutes synchronous feel; 31 rows; faster but fewer citations in export.
  • Brief 2: 29 minutes; solid table; hallucinated a Slack integration on ClickUp until we challenged it.
  • Billing: Plus subscription; no separate credit dashboard like Manus. Harder to forecast burn for finance.

Pick ChatGPT when: Everyone already lives in ChatGPT and tasks are small to medium.

Skip ChatGPT when: You need repeatable async jobs with stored artifacts and team analytics on credits.

Claude (Claude.ai + Claude Code)

What it is: Claude Opus 4.8 class models power careful writing and coding. Claude Code targets repos. Claude.ai adds research and agent previews.

June results

  • Brief 1: 44 minutes in chat; excellent prose summary; CSV required extra “export as CSV” nudge.
  • Brief 2: 26 minutes in chat with one correction pass; best citation discipline.
  • Claude Code: We scripted matrix from verified URLs in 33 minutes; best for developers, not PMs.

Pick Claude when: Quality of language, pushback, and repo work matter.

Skip Claude when: Non-technical staff need one-click deploy links without Git.

Traps

  • Manus Chat Mode vs Agent Mode: Chat saves credits; agent spends them.
  • Manus credit rollover rules: Monthly subscription credits reset each cycle and do not roll over (Manus Help Center).
  • ChatGPT “unlimited” marketing: Read limits footnotes.
  • Claude high effort: Turn effort down for bulk tasks.

Security and vendor notes

  • Manus: Meta acquisition blocked in China, April 2026. Treat ownership as unclear for enterprise DPAs.
  • ChatGPT: Mature enterprise story; enable privacy mode.
  • Claude: Strong policy communication; still not HIPAA by default.

Before customer PII: read trust centers and get legal sign-off.

Chat Mode vs Agent Mode (Manus-specific)

Manus Help Center still recommends Chat Mode for quick questions to save credits. Our June retest confirmed: a five-line fact check in Chat Mode used far fewer credits than kicking off Agent Mode for the same answer.

Wide Research and parallel subagents

Manus Wide Research spins parallel subagents for large source sets. Brief 1 on Manus used a wide-style pull once; credits landed above the 200-credit chart example in Help Center.

Mitigation: Narrow domains in the prompt (“only these 10 publications”). Upload paywalled excerpts yourself. Start with Chat Mode outline before Wide Research execution.

ChatGPT and Claude can parallelize via multiple chats or Code agents, but you orchestrate that yourself. Manus bundles orchestration at the cost of credit opacity.

Corporate ownership and procurement

Repeat from our review because compare readers skip it: Meta announced Manus acquisition; China blocked the deal in April 2026. Procurement teams should ask:

  1. Who is the contracting entity on the invoice?
  2. Where does data process geographically?
  3. Does training opt-out apply on Team tier?
  4. What happens if Manus merges into Meta consumer products?

ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) have longer enterprise paper trails. That does not make them automatically safer. It makes legal review more predictable.

Reliability week (informal)

We ran the same Monday morning journalist CSV prompt three days in a row on Manus:

  • Day 1: success, 52 min
  • Day 2: queue message, retry after 20 min, success
  • Day 3: success, 61 min

ChatGPT succeeded all three days under 45 min. Claude succeeded with one captcha hiccup on browse.

If your ops team needs same-hour SLA, keep ChatGPT or Claude as primary and Manus as overflow.

vs Perplexity and coding agents

Perplexity beats all three for fast cited Q&A. None replace Perplexity for a two-minute fact check.

Cursor / Windsurf beat all three for Git-native shipping. See Windsurf vs Cursor.

SlideAI beats all three for deck outlines. Agents are not presentation layout tools. See best AI presentation maker.

Example prompts (copy-paste)

Manus (agent mode):

Build a CSV of 40 EU climate tech newsletters. Columns: name, URL, focus, subscribe link if public.
Minimum 35 rows. Email only if listed on site. Skip paywalled directories.

ChatGPT:

Create a markdown table comparing three project tools for a 10-person agency.
Include pricing checked June 2026, AI features, and Slack integration yes/no.
Cite each price with URL.

Claude:

Review uploaded pipeline.csv. Flag rows with blank region.
Chart revenue by country. Output bullet summary under 200 words and CSV of anomalies.

Buying worksheet

  1. At least half my week is multi-step research with file outputs
  2. I can wait 30+ minutes async
  3. I will log credits per successful job for 10 tasks
  4. Legal approved autonomous browsing
  5. I already pay for ChatGPT or Claude as backup

5Pilot Manus Pro, keep backup chat
3-4Stay ChatGPT/Claude primary, Manus monthly

Scheduled tasks and monitoring

Manus advertises scheduled tasks on paid tiers (Help Center cites limits per plan). ChatGPT can approximate schedules via custom GPTs or external automation, but it is not the same as Manus-native Monday morning jobs.

Example schedule prompt (Manus):

Every Monday 8am ET, scan these three competitor blogs [URLs].
Email bullet summary: title, URL, one-line gist. Skip paywalled posts.

Claude users often wire the same job through Zapier plus Claude API. That is more setup, more control.

If monitoring is your main job, pilot Manus for two weeks and measure missed runs vs ChatGPT manual habit. Log each run in a spreadsheet: date, credits, success yes/no, human minutes to fix. That sheet beats any generic “AI agent” hype when you present tooling costs to your CFO.

June 2026 refresh notes

  • OpenAI shipped tighter agent safeguards on some security prompts (see models hub GPT-5.5 notes).
  • Claude Opus 4.8 effort slider changes cost on long sessions.
  • Manus pricing page still says verify live; screenshot before Q3 procurement.

Verdict

  • Manus: Use for async, file-first ops briefs when credits are tracked per job.
  • ChatGPT Agent: Use for individuals who want one subscription and medium tasks.
  • Claude: Use for quality writing, careful tables, and developer workflows.

Run Brief 1 and Brief 2 on all three with your real data policy before you standardize. Re-read Manus AI review for credit examples and failure modes.

Fair warning on benchmarks: Vendor agent demos often show one perfect run. Our June tests include wrong price cells, wrong integrations, and queue delays. Treat any single YouTube comparison as marketing until you run your own two briefs on your plan tier.

Frequently asked

8 questions
Is Manus AI better than ChatGPT Agent?

Manus is better when you need async multi-step jobs that return files, sites, or tables in a cloud sandbox. ChatGPT Agent is better for quick tasks inside a chat you already use daily. Neither replaces compliance review for regulated data.

How is Claude different from Manus?

Claude (chat and Claude Code) excels at careful language, coding in repos, and browser research with citations in-thread. Manus optimizes for finished deliverables in background VMs. Many teams use Claude for drafting and Manus for bounded ops projects.

How much does Manus cost vs ChatGPT Plus?

Manus uses credits per task (examples: ~200 credits for a 15-minute chart, ~900 for an 80-minute app build per Help Center). ChatGPT Plus is about $20/month with usage limits on agent features. Compare total monthly credits to how many finished jobs you run.

What is ChatGPT Agent mode in 2026?

ChatGPT Agent mode is on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans per OpenAI Help. Plus gets about 40 agent messages per month; Pro gets about 400. Check help.openai.com the week you subscribe.

Can Claude run autonomous tasks like Manus?

Claude offers agentic features in Claude.ai, research previews, and Claude Code for developers. Async long jobs differ from Manus marketing of background VMs. Test your exact brief on both before you standardize.

Which agent is best for research CSVs?

Manus and ChatGPT deep research both can return tables. Manus shows sandbox logs for audit. ChatGPT is faster for small tables. Claude is strong when you upload sources and want careful synthesis.

Who should skip all three?

Skip if you need HIPAA-ready defaults without vendor review, guaranteed access to paywalled databases, or same-hour uptime every day. Use human analysts or licensed data vendors.

What did AI Tools Radar test in June 2026?

We ran two agent briefs on all three: a 35-row journalist CSV with public URLs only, and a five-vendor CRM comparison table with pricing checked on date. We tracked wall time, credits or usage consumed, and how many facts needed human correction.
