Manus AI Review 2026: Pricing, Free Credits, Agent Test & Verdict
Manus AI review 2026 with real pricing, free credits, agent test results, and how it compares to ChatGPT and Perplexity for research tasks.
Short answer: Manus AI is a general-purpose agent that runs tasks in the cloud and returns finished work: reports, spreadsheets, sites, and slides, not just chat text. In our June 2026 tests, compared to official docs, it fits best for clear research and ops jobs with defined outputs. Corporate news matters too. Meta announced an acquisition in December 2025. China blocked it in April 2026. Long-term vendor stability is still a real question. Verdict: Watch for most teams until legal terms and pricing are confirmed for your account. Move to Use if you finish two end-to-end tasks on your plan without billing surprises and your compliance owner approves the data you will send.

How we tested (June 2026)
We ran Manus through the same AI Tools Radar agent checklist used in our June 2026 radar. We also compared how it fits next to models in latest AI models compared.
Test protocol
- Account access and credit balance on the live dashboard
- One research brief (journalist list with CSV output)
- One analysis brief (table comparison with date range and geography)
- Credit use compared to official examples on manus.im/help/credits and Help Center pricing
- Same brief shape tested in ChatGPT (agent and deep research) and Perplexity
- Policy read of trust.manus.im and terms pages (not a full formal vendor review)
We did not run a SOC 2 audit or pen test. When third-party dollar claims disagreed with Manus Help Center, we treated them as rough estimates only. Re-test after any Manus version banner (1.6 Lite vs 1.6 Max) changes on your workspace.

What is Manus AI?
Manus (Latin for hand, echoing MIT’s mens et manus) is an autonomous agent from Butterfly Effect, the company behind the Monica browser assistant. Public launch was March 6, 2025 in invitation-heavy beta. By late 2025, reporting cited roughly $125M annual revenue run rate and version Manus 1.6 (December 15, 2025).
Corporate timeline that matters to buyers
| Date | Event | Why it affects you |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 (mid) | HQ shift to Singapore; mainland access restricted | Data residency and support expectations |
| Dec 2025 | Meta announces acquisition (~$2B+ reported) | Roadmap may fuse with Meta AI; contracts need clarity |
| Jan to Mar 2026 | China reviews deal; exit scrutiny on executives reported | Supply-chain risk for global teams |
| Apr 27, 2026 | China blocks Meta’s acquisition of Manus | Uncertainty on ownership; watch vendor communications |
Meta’s site now states “Manus is now part of Meta” while Manus still sells subscriptions at manus.im. For buying teams, treat ownership as unclear until legal gets a current entity name, DPA, and data processing region in writing.
Manus vs traditional chatbots
| Dimension | Typical chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude chat) | Manus |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Turn-by-turn | Goal brief, async completion |
| Environment | Mostly stateless thread | Cloud VM, files, terminal, browser |
| Output | Text, occasional file | Deployed pages, CSV, slides, charts |
| Cost unit | Messages or subscription | Credits per active task |
| Best fit | Drafting, coding pair, Q&A | Multi-step web + file workflows |
Key features
Autonomous planning and cloud sandbox
You describe an outcome. Manus breaks it into steps, picks tools, and runs them in an isolated space with a file system, shell, and browser automation. Official docs contrast this with advice-only chat. Manus is meant to finish work: deploy a site, render a chart, compile a table. It does not only suggest next steps. Credit use scales with LLM tokens, VM minutes, and paid API calls (finance feeds, databases).
Manus’s Computer (transparency UI)
The activity panel shows browsing, commands, and intermediate files. For SEO teams, RevOps, and analysts, that audit trail is the clearest difference from a black-box answer. When a task fails, the log helps you see whether the blocker was CAPTCHA, login, or a bad assumption in step three.
Wide Research and parallel subagents
Wide Research spins parallel subagents. Each runs in its own sandbox to process large source sets. Manus markets this as 100+ sources at once. It helps with landscape scans, vendor comparisons, and literature-style pulls. Tradeoff: wide jobs use many credits and break when domains block the bot.
Async execution and scheduled tasks
Tasks continue while you are away. Paid tiers advertise higher concurrent and scheduled task limits. Help Center cites 20 concurrent on Pro vs 1 on Free. This matches real habits: kick off a competitor matrix before a meeting, review the CSV afterward.
Chat Mode vs Agent Mode
Manus docs recommend Chat Mode for quick questions to save credits. Agent Mode (Manus 1.6 Lite on Free; fuller 1.6 and 1.6 Max on Pro) is for multi-step work. Many overspend complaints come from using the agent for tasks that fit chat.
Integrations and adjacent products
Public feature pages include Slack integration, Mail Manus, Manus Browser Operator, AI slides, and an API at open.manus.ai/docs. Team plan marketing adds SSO, usage analytics, and shared slide templates. Treat integrations as moving targets. Confirm they are on in your account.
Pricing and credits
Manus billing is credit-based, not unlimited flat chat. Verify all numbers on manus.im/pricing the day you subscribe. Manus states the live pricing page is authoritative.
Plan snapshot (Help Center alignment, verify live)
| Plan | Listed price signal | Credits / limits (official docs) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/month | 300 daily refresh credits (1,500/month cap per Help Center); 1 concurrent task; 2 scheduled tasks | Interface test, light Lite agent |
| Pro (entry) | From $20/month | 4,000 monthly credits; 20 concurrent; 20 scheduled; Manus 1.6 family | Solo pros with recurring agent work |
| Pro (higher) | From $40/month | 8,000 monthly credits; 7-day trial listed in Help Center | Heavy individual usage |
| Team | From $20/seat/month | Shared admin, SSO, analytics, templates | Small teams needing governance |
Credit rules worth memorizing
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Monthly subscription credits | Reset each billing cycle; do not roll over |
| Add-on credits | Can persist while paid subscription stays active |
| Free / event credits | Separate pools; event credits expire with the promo |
| Consumption order | Event → daily → monthly → add-on → free |
| Failed tasks | Manus advertises refunds when failure is on their side |
| Completed artifacts | Storage and deployment of finished outputs do not keep billing |
Official task examples (credit magnitude, not dollars)
| Example task | Duration | Credits cited |
|---|---|---|
| NBA scoring efficiency quadrant chart | ~15 min | 200 |
| Wedding invitation webpage + deploy | ~25 min | 360 |
| Location-based sky events web app | ~80 min | 900 |
At $20/month for 4,000 credits, a 200-credit task is about 5% of monthly allotment if nothing else runs. A run of several 900-credit builds can exhaust Pro quickly. Use dashboard pre-task estimates and batch related work.
Stale pricing in older reviews: Some 2025 articles cite about $2 per task or $199 Pro tiers. Those do not match the current Free, Pro, and Team framing in Manus Help Center. Always screenshot your billing page for internal cost docs.
Real workflows / use cases
1. Media and outbound research list
Scenario: A B2B SaaS marketer needs 40 US journalists covering HR tech with outlet, beat, and public contact hints.
Prompt shape: Geography, sector definition, output columns, row minimum, exclude aggregators without bylines.
What worked in community and vendor replays: Structured CSV, reasonable source citations in the activity log.
Failure mode: Personal email guessing on sparse pages. Fix by requiring “email only if listed on author page” and accepting blanks.
Backup: Perplexity for quick name verification; Manus for the wide pull and file.
2. Vendor comparison matrix for buying decisions
Scenario: Compare five CRMs for a 15-seat agency on price, AI features, native integrations, and mobile app quality.
Prompt shape: Seat count, must-have integrations, date stamp for pricing, output as markdown table plus short recommendation paragraph.
Why Manus: Multi-site browsing and table assembly in one async job.
Risk: Pricing pages change. Ask Manus to label “checked on {date}” and plan human verification before contracts.
3. CSV cleanup and visualization for ops
Scenario: Upload pipeline.csv, flag blank regions, chart revenue by region, export PNG and summary bullets for a standup.
Why Manus: VM-side Python and chart generation without you wiring a notebook.
Risk: Wrong dtype inference on currency columns. Fix by specifying column names and currency format in the brief.
4. Internal tool or landing page prototype
Scenario: Single-page ROI calculator with form inputs and deploy link for a sales pilot.
Outcome pattern: Good for demos, mixed for production security. Auth, rate limits, and OWASP checks still on you.
Compare: Manus AI vs ChatGPT Agent vs Claude (2026) for agent-mode shootouts. Lovable and Replit-style builders if you live in Git. Manus if you want one agent to research, code, and deploy in one chain.
Limitations and failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Thin or empty table | Paywall, bot block, geo block | Upload excerpts; name allowed domains |
| Wrong country or language | Ambiguous brief | Pin locale, language, and “sources from {TLD}” |
| “Server busy” / queue | Peak demand | Retry off-peak; keep ChatGPT/Claude backup |
| Credit shock | Wide Research + retries | Start in Chat Mode; narrow scope; check estimate |
| Off-brand copy | Wrong tool for tone work | Use chat LLM for voice; Manus for data |
| Compliance block | Meta and China ownership dispute | Pause enterprise rollout; get legal update |
| Hallucinated pricing | Stale web snapshot | Require citations and manual spot check |
Beta-era complaints (empty ZIP exports, terminal freezes under load) still appear in 2026 forum threads. Pilot on non-critical work first.
Manus vs ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs other agents
| Dimension | Manus | ChatGPT (incl. agent / deep research) | Perplexity | Coding agents (Cursor, Devin-class) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core job | Finish multi-step outputs | Conversation + growing agent tools | Fast cited answers | Repos, PRs, CI |
| Async | Native | Mixed by surface | Mostly synchronous | Strong in dev pipelines |
| Transparency | Sandbox activity UI | Varies | Source cards | Git diffs |
| Artifacts | Sites, CSV, slides, deploys | Docs, code, files | Reports, exports | Code |
| Pricing feel | Credits per task load | Subscription + usage tiers | Subscription | Seat + usage |
| Enterprise | Team SSO marketed; ownership unclear | Mature OpenAI enterprise | Growing enterprise | Git-centric |
| Pick when | Bounded ops and research projects | Daily writing + coding | Quick research Q&A | Shipping software |
Manus’s own vs ChatGPT page argues action vs advice. Fair counter: ChatGPT is broader, more predictable for casual users, and often cheaper per quick answer. None replace lawyers, clinicians, or security sign-off.
Security and enterprise notes
Before you paste customer PII, cap tables, or unreleased roadmap details:
- Read the live privacy policy and trust center on manus.im.
- Confirm data region and whether prompts train models by default. Team marketing mentions data training opt-out.
- Ask whether SSO, domain controls, and admin analytics meet your IT standards.
- Document subprocessors and browser behavior. The agent may hit public URLs on your behalf.
- Revisit vendor status after China’s April 2026 block of Meta’s deal. Contracts should name the signing entity and continuity plan.
We classify Manus today as prosumer to mid-market, not a default for HIPAA or PCI without a formal vendor review. If Meta integration speeds up, re-check whether data flows change for manus.im accounts vs Meta Business tools.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong fit for structured research outputs and finished files
- Async model matches real analyst and founder workflows
- Transparent sandbox UI aids debugging and light audits
- Credit examples and dashboard estimates improve predictability vs pure surprise billing
- Wide Research and high file counts for large context projects
- Refund policy stated for vendor-side technical failures
Cons
- Credit math punishes vague or oversized prompts
- Paywalls, logins, and CAPTCHAs break unattended browsing
- Peak-time reliability still uneven in user reports
- Creative, brand, and executive comms need heavy human editing
- Corporate ownership uncertain after China blocked Meta acquisition
- Not a replacement for licensed databases unless you supply data
Who should use, watch, or skip
| Verdict | Audience |
|---|---|
| Use | Solo analysts, founders, ops leads with clear briefs and approved data types |
| Watch | Teams needing stable vendor story, formal DPA, or predictable monthly burn |
| Skip | Regulated health/finance without vendor review; brand-only studios; users who only need quick chat |
Upgrade from Watch to Use when all three are true:
- Two real tasks finished end-to-end on your plan without surprise credit loss
- Acceptable uptime for one work week in your timezone
- Compliance sign-off on data you will submit
Example prompts that work
| Task type | Prompt pattern |
|---|---|
| Media list | ”Find 35 US journalists covering climate tech for enterprise buyers. CSV columns: name, outlet, beat, profile URL, email only if on author page. Minimum 30 rows with verified outlet.” |
| Market scan | ”Compare Asana, Monday, ClickUp for a 12-person marketing agency. Table: entry price (June 2026), AI features, Slack/GA integrations, mobile app rating. Flag unknowns as TBD.” |
| Data cleanup | ”Use uploaded leads.csv. Drop rows with invalid email regex, dedupe by domain, chart leads by country PNG, summary under 200 words.” |
| Competitive deck pass | ”From uploaded pitch.pdf, extract 10 competitor claims, verify each against public pricing pages, output slide outline with citation links.” |
| Scheduled monitor | ”Every Monday 8am ET, scan three competitor blogs listed below, email bullet summary of new posts (title, URL, one-line gist).” |
Always specify output format, row counts, date ranges, and acceptance criteria. Prefer Chat Mode when the job is a single fact.
Buying decision worksheet
Answer yes or no before standardizing on Manus:
- At least 40% of my week is research-shaped finished outputs
- I can tolerate async turnaround over 15 minutes
- I will track credits per successful finished job for ten tasks
- Legal approved autonomous web browsing on my account
- I have a backup chat tool for writing and code
Four or more yes: run a 30-day pilot on Pro after confirming live pricing. Fewer: stay on Watch and re-check quarterly.

Frequently asked
8 questionsWhat is Manus AI?
Manus AI is a self-running agent from Butterfly Effect in Singapore. It plans and runs multi-step jobs in cloud sandboxes. You get files, sites, charts, and reports back. It launched in March 2025. The site is manus.im.
Is Manus AI free?
Yes, there is a Free plan with daily refresh credits and Chat Mode. Pro and Team add monthly credits and more tasks at once. Check manus.im/pricing before you budget.
How much does a Manus task cost?
Tasks use credits for AI tokens, VM time, and third-party APIs. Examples are about 200 credits for a 15-minute chart and 900 credits for an 80-minute app build. There is no fixed dollar price per task.
How is Manus different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is best for chat, drafting, and quick answers. Manus runs goal-driven jobs in the background. You get a sandbox, files, browser tools, and finished outputs, not just text replies.
Did Meta buy Manus AI?
Meta said it would buy Manus in December 2025 for over $2 billion. China blocked the deal in April 2026 for national security reasons. Who owns the company long term is still unclear for business buyers.
Is Manus better than Perplexity for research?
Perplexity is faster for cited Q&A and quick fact checks. Manus is better when you need a built file like a CSV, deck, or live page from many steps. It takes longer and costs more credits.
Who should skip Manus AI?
Skip if you need HIPAA-level guarantees without a formal vendor review, same-hour uptime for deadlines, or deep access to paywalled databases you cannot upload yourself.
Is Manus AI worth it in 2026?
Worth a pilot for solo users who do heavy research and track credits per finished job. Stay on Watch if compliance, China-related vendor risk, or queue errors block you.
